Epic and Lego cooperating on a metaverse for kids
Fortnite and Lego are teaming up to create a new project for kids through a partnership. This will allow them to learn about the different worlds of Fortnite and Lego in VR. Stars included in the development are Will Smith, Elijah Wood, Shaquille O’Neal, Jack Black, Tyler The Creator, and Whoopi Goldberg. “We’re excited to make a metaverse for kids – filled with fun, entertaining content and places for them to explore,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a statement.
Details are still to be revealed, but the company says whatever it is they end up building will be designed with a family-friendly experience. “The Lego Group and Epic Games have a long history of designing complex virtual worlds that are beneficial to children and their wellness. Their experience with the internet will help them make sure this next iteration of the internet is appropriate for kids,” the companies explained in a press release. Epic Games has extensive experience creating virtual worlds, most recently with the launch of Fortnite. Lego has been increasingly focused on video games, most recently with the release of the new game Leg.
Minecraft and Roblox
Minecraft and Roblox are two of the most popular online video games. They offer a similar style of play to Lego bricks that kids can explore with their imagination. Epic has spoken about creating a more child-friendly metaverse in the past. The new partnership between Facebook and Niantic is joining a host of other companies in building their own interpretation of the metaverse. They include everyone from Pokemon Go maker Niantic to the rebranded Facebook.
Don’t worry! There’s no information yet about what this new Fortnite-meets-Lego world could look like. Until now, no information circulates on when it will be available or on what platforms will launch. Here’s what they announced: “Children’s protection is paramount. It must be a priority for all parents and caretakers to ensure that dangers won’t compromise the child’s ability to play in any way. This first step ensures that the privacy and well-being of children should always be the top priority.
