Websites have been using visitors’ systems to mine cryptocurrency carrying a big risk. This trend, growing rapidly, will probably further worsen the situation. In recent discoveries, YouTube was running advertisements through an infected JavaScript code that generated cryptocurrency. This revelation took place when the site ran with antivirus programs installed on their systems.
These programs noticed YouTube incorrectly as a threat. They, thus, began to show concern that specific antivirus software had just been misleading users. According to Trend Micro, JavaScript code infected ads from Google’s DoubleClick platform. With that harnessed the computing power of the YouTube visitor’s computer to generate Monero digital coins using Coinhive. It is common for visitors to stay on certain websites much longer than needed, inadvertently running scripts which generate Monero e-currencies without their knowledge.
Because of the anonymity of digital currencies, it is virtually impossible to find the person responsible for inserting the malicious javascript code into the advertisements. The internet is a dangerous place as a whole, with tech giants such as Google and YouTube being prime targets. However, the value of cryptocurrency has been skyrocketing since its creation years ago and people have been trying to take advantage of this new market trend in a variety of ways.
Google announced that the malicious ads, which were spread from Google’s own platform, were blocked within two hours so you don’t need to worry about encountering a hijacked ad. However, based on Trend Micro which said that suspicious activities were happening as early as January 18, it is possible that the malicious code was running for a few days or even a week.
