
World Safer Internet Day | Practical guidelines to avoid cyber risks
World Safer Internet Day is organized by the Pan-European Network of National Information and Awareness Centres to further education about online safety. The goal is “Create, communicate, and share with respect”, especially focused on kids and teens.
The Internet has the power to change how we communicate and it’s changing the way different people interact. While it facilitates many positive changes in our society, it also creates a number of problems. In order to avoid any risks to the privacy of communications, CSA reports that they have fostered a culture of security among providers. For digital users, it’s important to understand that they should be taking steps to ensure their privacy is protected while also remaining safe online.
HEA’s portal which contains links to many different organizations, independent authorities, public institutions and providers. Visitors can assess their knowledge of electronic communications security and privacy issues by filling out a questionnaire. They can also have access to an information sheet upon download.
These are some practical guidelines to help you avoid cyber risks that come from using wireless internet:
- Enable encryption on your wireless router. You should set your security settings to WPA or WPA2 encryption. Change your password often and make it a strong password. Change the network name (SSID) to your own name.
- Configure the wireless network to accept connections only from specific computers, tablets and mobile phones.
- Change the username and password for managing the wireless router from what is set by manufacturers. It’s also wise to change your password at regular intervals.
- Disable remote management access to your router in case this was not disabled by the manufacturer
- Do not allow management of your router via a wireless connection.
- Make sure your computer and other devices are always connected to your wireless router securely. If you see any unfamiliar devices connecting to it, change your password immediately.
- When the wireless network is not in use, turn it off.”
