New Fine on Apple from the Netherlands
On Monday 21 February the Dutch authorities submitted the fifth fine in a row. The fine amounts for €5 million with the recipient the technology giant Apple. As the Dutch authorities complained, Apple refuses to comply with the recommendations made to it to implement alternative payment methods in the App Store and in some specific applications.
The Dutch authorities have been responding with fines of EUR 5 million since 15 January, i.e. for at least six weeks now. For that reason, Apple can stop taking a 30% commission from app creators. It should be noted that the Netherlands is not the only country that has expressed its disapproval of this Apple regulation. Even the United States and so it made a counter-proposal of a 27% commission. This was rejected by the ACM as it does not comply with the original decision.
Notable was the reaction of the EU’s vice-president for antitrust issues. Who stated that it is a habit of the US giants to prefer to pay fines rather than comply with the regulations.
