New SD Express cards are intended for 8K video recording
The performance of SD Express has increased over the years, with their speed staying ahead of other storage technologies. And, to stay ahead of file sizes, the SD Association introduced SD 8.0 as an upgrade.
The new PCI Express 4.0 card promises four times faster speeds than earlier PCI Express 3.0 cards, reaching 3,940 MB/s (megabytes per second). This was possible with two additional PCIe 4.0 connections for more bandwidth. The new SD Express will be available in many different varieties. You can choose from SDHC, which stands for “Secure Digital High Capacity”, SDXC which stands for “Secure Digital Extended Capacity” and SDUC which is a smaller variation of the same thing. They offer older card readers full speed, but only if they’re old enough.
The new cards are aimed at professional photographers who create very high quality images or take a lot of RAW images in burst mode. They’re also suitable for VR video and mobile devices.
However, this is a glimpse into the future, as their adoption and production by companies will take a while longer.
