A foldable smartphone for Samsung

Several announcements were made by Samsung at their recent developers conference but many of us were waiting to see and learn more about the company’s foldable smartphone. Samsung decided on showing it through the unveiling of the new Infinity Flex Display and also the new One UI.

The Infinity Flex Display’s a new AMOLED foldable panel and continues to function normally. It’s durable, but more importantly, it performs great when used continually. Justin Denison, Vice President of Mobile Product Marketing, pulled the foldable smartphone out of his pocket to show how the display works. If someone is wondering why it seems like a brick, they pointed out that this is a special case to hide the design. They also assured that inside the case, there is a phone full of power and very impressive.

In the presentation, we saw a foldable smartphone with the following features. It has an external screen used when folded, while when opened the internal screen provides a tablet-like display. You can have up to 3 apps open at the same time with the multi-tasking mode and a seamless transition between screens.

The external display is 4.58 inches (1960×840) and the internal 7.3 inch (2152 x 1536).

As for the new One UI, the company is focusing its development on three main pillars: simplification, ease of use and aesthetics. So, the redesign was done to emphasize what matters. Just like mentioned repeatedly in the presentation. The One UI will split the screen into top and bottom, moving potential actions to the bottom for greater convenience.

Users will see more rounded corners in line with Samsung’s smartphone design. They will also have the option for a night mode with brighter colours.
