A revolutionary computer – Xerox 8010 | Techday, April 27th
On this TECHDAY in history, on April 27th 1981, Xerox introduced one of the most innovative computers of all time. We’re talking about the Xerox 8010 Information System, more commonly known as the Xerox Star.
Based on the design of the experimental Xerox Alto, the Star brings to the world of business computers a series of implementations that would enter mass production in the following years. It was the first workstation on the market that combined a fully graphical user interface (GUI) with icons, folders, etc., a mouse, Ethernet networking and print server, file server and even e-mail functions.
The Xerox Star was not a commercial success, and the company eventually discontinued it. However, the Star was a significant milestone in the development of the personal computer, and it influenced the development of many other computers that followed.
