TECHDAY 3 June Hale Telescope

Dedication of the Hale Telescope | Techday, June 3rd

The Hale Telescope is a 200 inch (5.1 m), reflecting telescope at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California, US. The name derived from the astronomer George Ellery Hale. While not quite completed, it was dedicated as the Hale Telescope on this TECHDAY in history, on June 3rd 1948. The telescope’s original designe was for photography work. This work was done on glass photographic plates, and its first official photos were taken by Edwin Hubble on January 26, 1949.

The 200-inch (5.1-meter) Hale Telescope was the largest one in the world at the time of its completion. Used for a wide variety of scientific studies, including the discovery of the first known asteroids, it would first accurately measure of the universe’s expansion rate, and the identification of the first known quasars. It would create the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey later on, which mapped the sky and produced a photographic atlas, still used today.
