TECHDAY 4 June DRAM patent

DRAM patent | Techday, June 4thΒ

On this TECHDAY in history, on June 4th 1968, marked the awarding of patent No. 3387286. Dr Robert Dennard recieved this award for the realization of the first dynamic random access memory (DRAM).

This type of RAM gradually became prevalent in the 1970s and remains so today, through successive developments. According to the patent, the memory had an array of cells and bit lines all connected for reading and writing of information.

Through an overview, Dennard had described how he was inspired to experiment on this technology that led to the innovation. He admired the simplicity of the magnetic memory, in combination with his work on metal-oxide semiconductor memories.

After receiving the patent, he proceeded manufacturing the 1-kilobit DRAM with three transistors in the design, unlike 4-kilobit chips that had only one transistor during the mid 1970s.

Naturally, Dennard’s work would play an instrumental role in the history of desktop computers. He entered the Hall of Fame of National Inventors in 1997.
