The Greek retro joystick
The story began as an April Fool’s joke. On the first of April, Dony had written on his blog about a Greek project undertaken by Kostas Hadjivassiliou – aka dinohatzi – concerning the creation of a new Greek arcade controller. At first, the post was perceived by some as an April Fool’s joke, but in the process, it became clear to the retro gaming community that it wasn’t just a prank, especially since it was seen at this year’s AmiCamp. The new retro joystick has been in the testing phase for (at least) a few weeks now. It will come in one and two-button versions, and also with an auto-fire switch, which should prove particularly useful to fans of shoot ’em up games. One possible name for the joystick is “The Greek Stick” or “TGS” for short.
It’s a joystick with an aluminum casing, clearly of a higher quality than the (now legendary of course) Pac-Man and Tomahawk joystick offerings, which had plastic casings. Due to its metal casing, the Greek Stick will be heavier than the other two. On the Vintage Computers Society blog, they posted a photo of the new joystick next to the two legends [Pac-Man and Tomahawk] to help retro gamers better understand the bulk of the new arcade controller.
The dimensions of the aforementioned controllers and the upcoming Greek one are as follows:
- Tomahawk: 126mm x 92mm x 43mm.
- Pac-man: 149mm x 103mm x 40mm.
- The Greek Stick: 120mm x 94mm x 34mm.
