Windows Vista launch | Techday, January 30th
On this TECHDAY in history, on January 30th 2007, marked the Windows Vista launch! Windows Vista becomes available for retail sale, succeeding Windows XP, the longest-running version of Windows with over five years of life. Already since November 2006, when its development was completed, Vista has been available to computer builders. Vista has also been the most anticipated Windows, as information and screenshots of the ambitious “Longhorn” (code name used during development) have been circulating since 2005.
On this techday, Microsoft made internationally available for download the operating system through the Windows Marketplace. This was the first time that the company release a Windows version through a digital distribution platform.
The reception of Vista was not enthusiastic, although the development of Vista’s DirectX 10 graphics standard created a big splash in the gaming world. Windows Vista would be succeeded by Windows 7 three years later, in July 2009.
