The first trial of robotic microsurgery

Robotic microsurgery | Trial robot surgery

Dutch doctors completed the first clinical trial of robot-assisted ultramicrosurgery in humans.

Advancements in technology have made it possible to handle blood vessels inside the body with a diameter as small as 0.3mm. As a matter of fact, AMP explained the following. Ordinarily, the success of the operation, though, always depends on the precision and stability of the doctor’s hands.

Ultramicrosurgery, with the help of a robotic platform, is a potential solution. This allows more controlled and stable movements.

20 breast cancer patients and lymphedema sufferers tested Microsure’s new MUSA robot. They divided randomly in two groups. One group underwent surgery with the help of the robotic system and the other operated by humans. The robotic system helped doctors vitally. They could reconnect lymphatic vessels in the breast by moving and arranging them for the connection to nearby blood vessels.

Primarily, the evaluation of procedure was in terms of duration and success. Additionally, monitored the patients’ condition, both one month and three months after the procedure. Recent studies have confirmed the robotic microsurgery to be used successfully on humans and improved patients’ quality of life.

Maastricht University Medical Centre’s Tom van Mulken, who helped write the Nature Communications paper says, “Larger clinical trials involving more patients and more surgeons would need to confirm these initial findings, which seem to be promising for the future of robotic supermicrosurgery.
