Driverless buses are back
Five years after the first, experimental driverless bus runs in Thessalian cities. Trikala has decided to permanently add them to their urban transport routes.
The development company of Trikala city, “e-trikala SA,” launched a tender for supplying two modern buses to be used on urban routes and connect the city centre with SEFAA and the bus station.
If the project succeeds and meets considerable reception after six months of testing, then it will become permanent.
The trial of the autonomous buses in Trikala was part of a larger project, called “Smart Move”. It aims to improve public transportation in the city and reduce traffic congestion. The project received funding by the European Union. It was a collaboration between several organizations, including the City of Trikala, the Region of Thessaly, the Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The trial of the autonomous buses was considered a success, with passengers reporting high levels of satisfaction with the service. The buses received praise for their smooth. Another praise revolved around comfortable rides and the convenience of not having to wait for a driver. The trial also demonstrated that autonomous buses can be a viable solution for improving public transportation in smaller cities and towns.
Overall the project Smart Move is a great example of how autonomous vehicles can enhance public transportation and make it more efficient, reliable and safe. The city of Trikala is now planning to expand the route of the autonomous buses and increase their frequency, as well as exploring the possibility of integrating them with other forms of public transportation.
