On this TECHDAY in history, on April 28th 2003, Apple launched the iTunes Music Store. The store sold songs for 99¢ that were compatible with the Apple iPod and iTunes software. They were not the first to sell digital music, but they would be the first to gain widespread popularity The service was an instant success, with over one million songs sold in its first week, and went on to change the music industry.
The iTunes Music Store rejuvenated the dying music business and swelled Apple’s profit. In only five years, it had become the number 1 music retailer in the U.S..
One of the main features of iTunes was its ability to act as a hub for the user’s digital media collection. It could import music from CDs, as well as download and purchase music, videos, and other content from the iTunes Store. iTunes could also synchronize with the user’s device allowing the user to transfer their media collection to their mobile devices.
Additionally, iTunes also offered a range of other features. Users could create and edit playlists, share music with others through iTunes Home Sharing, and access the iTunes Store to purchase and download media.
Over time, iTunes became a popular platform for music, movies, and other forms of digital media. However, in 2019, Apple announced that it would be ending support for iTunes. Despite its popularity, iTunes was eventually phased out in favor of these new, more focused apps.
